2021 Nürburgring 24 Hours Qualifying 2 REPORT

【2021 Nürburgring 24 Hours / Nürburgring】

The second qualifying fort he 24h at the Nürburgring is in the books. It was the night session, it was the chance for the drivers to learn the track in the night conditions. „The night practise is very important for the drivers for two main reasons“, said David Pittard, who drive the Walkenhorst Motorsport BMW M6 GT3 #101 with Yokohama Tyres. „First reason for the drivers itself. Having done most of the racing on the Nürburgring during the day, there you can see endlesly in the distance, spot your turning points and reference marks for the breaking etc. This is now drasticly reduced to a bubble of light, which is barely 50 meters ahead of you.

When you travelling up to 270 kp/h, things coming to you very quickly. So the practise session gives us a chance to ease into the darkness. It feels a lot faster, than it really is. That is because the vision you have is greatly reduced, everything is closer, everything seems faster and everything seems smaller. The other main reason is to optimise the setup fort he night aswell. The track temperature can drasticly reduce from the day running tot he night running, where we can easy see 20 degres drop in the track temperature. This will greatly effect the setup of the car. So we had to know which Yokohama compund of Yokohama tyres we can use in which temperature windows and what small tweaks we had to make to the car, like setup changes.“

„We didn´t do a qualifying programm this evening, we only did a test session this evening. Our changes worked good“, told Walkenhorst Motorsport team manager Niclas Königbauer after the 3h Session.“For tomorrow is our goal to entert he Top Qualifying 2 with car #101 and fight for the Pole-Position!“

In the SP10-class Cameron Evans, Lance Boicelli, David Thilenius and Charlie Postins finished the session in the Walkenhorst Motorsport BMW M4 GT4 on position five.

Yokohama enginieer Mark Williams was happy with the performance from the tyres in the night. The rubber performed good at the cooler track temperatures. That gives the engineer a good feeling for the 24h race from Saturday to Sunday.
