2021 Nürburgring 24 Hours Qualifying 1 REPORT

【2021 Nürburgring 24 Hours / Nürburgring】

The first qualification for the 24h at the Nürburgring is over. The session lasted 90 minutes and was shaped by changeable weather conditions. Some sections on the Nordschleife were fully wet, other sections dry. These were very difficult conditions for the drivers and the tyres from Yokohama. It was crucial to have the right camber and pressure.

In the SP9-class has Walkenhorst Motorsport entered three BMW M6 GT3. The fastest of the three cars was the machine with the #101 on the numberplate. David Pittard, Ben Tuck, Christian Krognes and Jörg Müller share the car. Krognes drove the fastest time of the car in the first session. He drove in 8:25.033 minutes around the legendary track, that was enough for position four at the end oft he 90 minutes. „My first Lap was with the intermediates, 20% of the track was dry, 80% wet. The Tyre performed as expected. On the dry parts we had movement in the blocks of the tyre, a bit more than expected“, told Christian Krognes after the session. „I´m very happy with the session, not sure pacewise where we really are. I had than a run on scrubbed medium tyres. I feld the rear was a bit smeary. At combined breaking, when you realy put load on the front, you need the rear to follow. That was the most challenging part of the car. The tyre itself delifered as expected, too. After that, i had a new tire. The half part oft he first lap was a bit pointy. The construction is a bit different, then the tyre is new. I had a bit to learn, how the new tyre really was, because the conditions was not optimal. We see how the tyre really ist, then we´re driving some more laps in Q2.“

Walkenhorst Motorsport teammanager Niclas Königbauer: „We´re really happy with the performance. P4 is a good result for us. Now we want to hold the position in Q2, but there are some uncertainties about the weather.

Yokohama enginieer Mark Williams is also pleased with the result. „We´re happy with P4. The Tyre worked good. For Q2, that will be driven in the night, we must look how the tyre is working with the cooler air and the cooler track temperature. But we hope, that the track will be dry, so we can collect more data from the session.“

The M6 from Mario von Bohlen, Sami-Matti Trogen, Kuba Giermaziak and Jörg Müller – who drives on two cars – endet the session on the 27th position (Position 25 in class).

Position 33 in the SP9 Class (Position 62 in general) for the third M6 of the Team. Teamowner Henry Walkenhorst shares the car with Friedrich von Bohlen, Jörg Breuer and Andreas Ziegler.

In the SP10-class starts the Walkenhorst Motorsport BMW M4 GT4 on Yokohama tyres. Cameron Evans, Lance Boicelli, David Thilenius and Charlie Postins drive the car through the green hell. The vehicle finished the first qualification in fourth position in class. Postins drove the fastest time in the GT4-Car. The american drove the time at the drying track at the end of the session. „We are very happy with progress after the first quali session of the weekend“, so Postins. „The session started off wet on the majority of the track but conditions rapidly improved. With 15 minutes of the session left to run we bolted on a new set of Yokohama’s to go for a representative time. Despite a few traffic issues I was happy with the lap and was pleasantly surprised by the grip levels give the early rain. Overall it was a promising session what that has us in a confident mood for the weekend ahead.“

The legendary Opel Manta also trusts in the quality of Yokohama tyres, Position three in SP3-class was the result of the session for the crowd favorite with the foxtail.
