What is SUPER FORMULA?

The formula cars with single-seat, open cockpit, and exposed wheels are widely recognized as the fastest form of race car even by people unfamiliar with motor racing. The formula cars are just built for competition and to pursue pure speed.

The top single-seater category in Japan has gone through the generation changes which started from F2000 to F2, then to F3000. In 1996, however, the country parted ways with those international racing categories by creating Formula Nippon, which evolved into Super Formula in 2013. The series hasn’t had any overseas races yet, but it isn’t purely domestic, as it always has foreign drivers. And Super Formula is recently recognized as one of the “preparing categories” for Formula One in the global motor racing community.

In Super Formula, all competitors must use the same SF19 chassis, which was introduced in 2019, and manufactured by Dallara in Italy. But they can choose either the engine supplied by Toyota or the one from Honda. Every engine is equipped with the OverTake System. It is the system that drivers can operate by push-button to boost the engine power for a limited duration by putting extra fuel – the fuel flow is regulated at normal times – into the engine. Thanks to this, there are always plenty of exciting overtaking actions on the track in the races.

The 2022 Super Formula calendar consists of ten races in seven meetings. This means three doubleheaders have two races on the same weekend, one each on Saturday and Sunday. The qualifying system has been changed for this season, and there are only two sections, Q1 and Q2, instead of three as it was until last year. The drivers are divided into two groups for Q1, and the top six from each group fight for the pole position in Q2.

The management of Super Formula initiated the SUPER FORMULA NEXT50 project this year, as the year 2022 is the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the All Japan F2000 Championship in 1973. Under the slogan of “Super Formula, Asia’s leading race category,” the series will provide more entertaining races and develop a new generation of formula cars to achieve carbon neutrality.

Yokohama Tire in Super Formula

Older motor racing fans may remember the iconic red-and-black ADVAN liveried cars in the Japanese top formula categories in bygone days. Yokohama Tire has a long and rich history in formula car races and has been the sole tire supplier of Super Formula since 2016.

Yokohama Tire’s continuous support to the Super Formula series isn’t limited to the tire service at the race tracks. For example, the company developed the softer compound tires to allow the races in which using the two types of tires is mandated, which should improve the show.

Yokohama Tire also goes along with the SUPER FORMULA NEXT50 project and is committed to continue to supply the tires from 2023 onward. Plus, the company is working on developing the new control tires for Super Formula, using sustainable materials (more than 35%) but not compromising the on-track performance, due to be introduced in 2025.
