Less than three weeks from the previous race meeting at Fuji, the 2022 Super GT series had its third event at Suzuka Circuit. As was the case in the Fuji round, held in the Golden Week holidays, this meeting at Suzuka also welcomed a crowd of spectators.

As a curious coincidence, each Friday of the three-race weekends this year, including this Suzuka round, wasn’t favored by fine weather, but the concern about rain always dissolved on Saturday and Sunday. However, it was unseasonably hot over the weekend, and many pointed out the possibility that the high-temperature conditions might influence the race’s outcome.

Four GT300 class Yokohama Tire users from Group A got through the Q1 barrier, and so did another four of them from Group B. With some of the leading cars being penalized and their best times being deleted, the class’s championship leader, Kiyoto Fujinami, behind the wheel of Realize Nissan Mechanic Challenge GT-R, set the third-fastest time in Q2. Given that the car carried a 66kg Success Weight, Fujinami’s performance was amazing.

And Apr GR86 GT followed the GT-R and ended Q2 in fourth. It was worth noting that Hiroaki Nagai clocked the time in Q2 after his veteran teammate, Manabu Orido, survived Q1. Nagai is a gentleman driver based in Mie Prefecture, where Suzuka Circuit is located, so he deserved praise for finely extracting the new car’s potential at his “home” race track.

In the GT500 class, Kohei Hirate in Realize Corporation ADVAN Z ended Q1 in the tenth place and failed to advance into Q2. But WedsSport ADVAN GR Supra with Sena Sakaguchi at the wheel cleared Q1 by setting the sixth-fastest time. And then Yuji Kunimoto broke the course record for the first time in four years on his only second flying lap, which was enough to secure his first pole position in the Super GT series.

Again, the race was eventful, with two Safety Car (SC) periods and two FCYs (Full Course Yellow). Kunimoto in WedsSport ADVAN GR Supra made a good start and led the field through the first corner only to lose the position before he completed the opening lap. Shortly after that, the first FCY came in force because a GT500 car slowed down and then halted.

Kunimoto lost more positions and dropped to fifth, but his effort finally stopped the slide. Helped by the first SC period, he could reduce the deficit to the leading cars to a minimum. And whereas many rivals made early stops because of wilting heat, Kunimoto extended his stint as long as possible and changed to Sakaguchi on Lap 24 when he was the temporary leader. After the stop, the car moved back to fifth, but Sakaguchi drove consistently, and there was no real threat to him even after the second SC from Lap 40 until he finished in that position.

Thanks to other cars’ falls and dropouts, Daiki Sasaki, behind the wheel of Realize Corporation ADVAN Z, emerged to eighth, but he seemed to be struggling. However, things changed after Sasaki handed the car to Hirate on Lap 22 because a slight alteration of tire pressure for his fresh set of tires and other things paid off. Consequently, Hirate gained a few positions and eventually moved up to sixth on the final lap. Thus, the Yokohama shoed GT500 cars accomplished a long-absent double point finish.

Turning to the GT300 class, Fujinami in Realize Nissan Mechanic Challenge GT-R kept the third place where he started the race, and Orido in Apr GR86 GT and Yusuke Tomibayashi driving MachSyaken Air Buster MC86 Mach-Go followed.

Then, the latter’s team went for a gamble. On Lap 16, when Tomibayashi came in to change to Reiji Hiraki, the team didn’t replace any tires at the stop to save the time to do so. As a result, Hiraki found himself in the lead among the early stoppers. Many thought it was a reckless race strategy since the temperatures were high and it was harsh conditions for the tires. But the drivers managed their one set of tires well, and they gradually climbed through the field as their rivals made pit stops one after another.

Both Fujinami and Orido visited their pit on Lap 23. When their teammates, J.P. de Oliveira and Nagai, rejoined the race after the driver change, they found Hiraki running ahead of them. The pit stops of these cars gave Yuya Motojima at the wheel of Weibo Primez Lamborghini GT3 the interim leading position.

However, Motojima went off the track after a slight collision with another car on Lap 25 when he was about to change to Takashi Kogure. As a result, the Lamborghini’s left-hand rear tire was damaged, which meant the crew dropped out of the fight for the race win, but he didn’t lose too much time, thanks to FCY immediately after the incident.

When all GT300 cars had done the mandatory stops, Hiraki was running in third, followed by Oliveira in fourth and Kogure in fifth. Probably because of this Yokohama trio’s pressure from behind, the car in the second place made a costly mistake on Lap 40, and each of the trio automatically gained a position.

The close battle between Hiraki and Oliveira during the final laps fascinated the spectators. It became one of the race’s highlights, but Hiraki didn’t give way and finished second, which was the best result ever for the team.

Realize Nissan Mechanic Challenge GT-R extended its championship lead by finishing the race in third. Weibo Pirmez Lamborghini GT3 came in fourth. While Nagai lost two places on the final lap, Apr GR86 GT ended the race in eighth, and the team celebrated their new car’s first point finish.

Drivers’ Voices

Yuji Kunimoto (WedsSport ADVAN GR Supra)

【Result : 5th. in the GT500 class】

“It was really hot and the track temperature was very high, but the tire degradation was minimum. So our race pace was comparable to others, and we could drive both stints in a satisfying pace. But, obviously, there is a lot of room for improvement. For example, I lost a few places immediately after starting from the pole position. We will try to make progress in those areas to become stronger as a team. That said, it was a big step for us to earn some championship points at Suzuka which has been one of our weak tracks. We will commit to the continuous tire development work and make the best possible preparation for the future races. Our aim is to achieve another pole position and to find a better and consistent race pace.”

Sena Sakaguchi (WedsSport ADVAN GR Supra)

【Result : 5th. in the GT500 class】

“We finished the race in fifth. It was good to race until the end and received the checkered flag in any way. I expected a tough race for us because we haven’t been so good at Suzuka in the past, but we could fight persistently in both stints. However, if you look at our performance in detail, I think there was a significant gap between our good moments and bad moments. To achieve better results in the races, we need more consistency in that sense. So it is our homework for the coming races. While maintaining our main weapon, the speed in the qualifying run, we will try to reinforce our weak points to fight at the front in the future races.”

Daiki Sasaki (Realize corporation ADVAN Z)

【Result : 6th. in the GT500 class】

“The car felt extremely good right from the beginning of Saturday’s official practice, and I saw a sign of improvement in race pace, which has been our main challenge. It was still nowhere near enough, but we finished the race in sixth, thanks to Hirate’s effort to catch up in the second half. So I feel we have done all we could do today. But we still have a lot to do to fight for a win and need more cooperative work with Yokohama Tire. Of course, we have to further improve our car with the team as well. But if we work hard and learn from each other, I believe it will be quite possible to win a race before too long.”

Kohei Hirate (Realize corporation ADVAN Z)

【Result : 6th. in the GT300 class】

“I made a mistake in the qualifying, which resulted in missing out Q2, so I had to apologize about it to the team. Today, we struggled a little in the first half of the race, but the adjustment of tire pressure and so on for the second stint plus some setup change after the qualifying worked well. As a result, I could catch up and overtake a few cars, as a compensation for my mistake in Saturday’s qualifying, I would say. We will have more races at Fuji and Suzuka after this round. With this year’s new Nissan Z, I feel we can fight against other cars on the straights, and it certainly works positively for us. Therefore, we must be able to fight for a podium place or the top of it. I think you can have a high expectation to our performance in the mid-to-late season.”

Yusuke Tomibayashi (MACHSYAKEN AIR BUSTER MC86 MACH GO)

【Result : 2nd. in the GT300 class】

“I’ve always been comfortable driving around Suzuka Circuit and generally performed well. But, on top of that, the team gave us a perfect car and tires. I thought that a podium finish would be possible only if we could pull off the no-tire-change strategy. So I feel I did a solid job in this eventful race. Reiji also had an incredible drive, and I am relieved that we got the first podium finish in the third race from my Super GT debut. The car I drive in the Super Taikyu series is hard on tires, and I usually look after the tires in the first half of my stint. And I did many long stints in the Super Taikyu car, so probably that experience helped me today. I could control the tire pressure within the assumed range. Of course, I aim to go one step higher, but I am happy with my performance today because I think I brought out the best I could.”

Reiji Hiraki (MACHSYAKEN AIR BUSTER MC86 MACH GO)

【Result : 2nd. in the GT300 class】

“We didn’t change the tires. So the final laps were really tough, as they were almost gone. The GT3 cars closed in from behind, and they put heavy pressure on me. But I remembered the last-minute defeat in a similar situation last year, and I was like “Never let them go by!” I would like to praise myself about my defensive drive against J.P. (Oliveira). He had a certain advantage in braking and came really close to me at the Chicane, for example. So it was a very difficult battle for me, but I managed to keep my position until the end. We will make the best preparation, aiming at a win the next time around.”

Kiyoto Fujinami (REALIZE NISSAN MECHANIC CHALLENGE GT-R)

【Result : 3rd. in the GT300 class】

“I am so happy to get on the podium even with a 66kg Success Weight! The car was so heavy and very, very hard on tires, to be honest. But I suppose that this result was made possible because the tires have some built-in advantage which withstood the heavy weight. As a result, we are still leading the championship and now have a significant point gap with the team in second. The next Fuji round will be even harder for us, but we will try to add some championship points steadily again.”

Engineer’s Voice

Takayuki Shiraishi [The Yokohama Rubber Co.,LTD. Motorsports Tire Development Dept. No.1 Tire Development Division]

“The GR Supras have generally struggled at Suzuka, and we also had difficulty providing the tires that are suited to the WedsSport ADVAN GR Supra’s setup. But the team found a good setup to work with the tires based on those we used at the previous Fuji round. As a result, the car clocked that time in the qualifying session and secured the second consecutive pole position. We are deeply grateful for their effort.

“The Yokohama-shoed cars ended the race in fifth and sixth. WedsSport ADVAN GR Supra lost a few positions in the early stage partly because of a tire-related issue but ran at a good pace in the race’s second half. Realize Corporation ADVAN Z’s pace was equally good, if you look at it in a whole race, and showed an admirable catch-up. Last year at Suzuka, the Kondo Racing’s car performed decently, but the WedsSport-backed car failed to get a good result. So I think these results may become a boost for the fifth round at Suzuka in summer.

“It was a big surprise for us that MachSyaken Air Buster MC86 Mach-Go finished in second with only one set of tires. Considering the high temperatures today, we weren’t confident about such a strategy, but the team made a good decision.

“Realize Nissan Mechanic Challenge GT-R came in third, carrying a 66kg. Our hats off to the team! They found a setup that was compatible with our tires very early and continued to develop the car based on that for a long time. So they thoroughly know the good points and bad points of our tires. The main reason for their consistent results is that the team always thinks about how to fight races with such a rich knowledge about tires. And the data they provided us has been so valuable for the development work of the tires, which we eventually deployed to other cars. In that sense, their GT-R has been our GT300 class tire development benchmark, I would say.

“There will be no Super GT race in June and July, but we will have a tire manufacturers’ joint testing session. In the testing, we will work on some new developments that aim for good results under the high temperature conditions in summer. We appreciate your continued support of us.”
